Ethel Gordon Manson (Mrs. Bedford Fenwick)


Ethel Gordon Manson was Britain's first state-registered nurse. She was Matron to Barts School of Nursing from 1881 until 1887 and significantly extended the training period for nurses.
As Mrs. Bedford Fenwick, after her marriage, she became famous for her campaigning got the registration of nurses, achieving this aim by the Nurses Registration Act of 1919, and being appointed state registered nurse Number 1.
She is regarded as a great founder of professional nursing who spoke of some needs and developments half a century ahead of her time.
