In 1878 Phillipa Flowerday, aged 32, became the first industrial nurse. She was employed by J & J Coleman, Norwich (The famous mustard makers) to care for the health of the employees.
Phillipa Flowerday trained at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital for a year before taking up this post. Wages were 26 shillings a week. Her work included helping a doctor each morning, and taking supplies from the works kitchen to the sick at home--about 45 visits a week. She assisted the Coleman's Sick Society, administering a 'clothing club' and in 1888 she married the head gardener to Coleman's. At that time she was replaced by Sister Quarry.
Phillipa Flowerday's work set the model for Coleman and other companies in the care of their employees.
